Moving!

1 min read
So yes, as the title suggests, I am moving to a new account
>>:icondmaterialize:<<
You may continue watching me there if you like. :)

And why the move? Well, I'm not fond of my account name.. universe-of-doodles. When I first created it I had intended for it to convey that my mind is like a universe of creative happenings, but over the years I've been becoming increasingly aware that it does not convey that. On the contrary, I feel that it implies that all I do is doodle, which is not the message I want to send. Plus, this account is rather old now and is rather cluttered by many old deviations that I would like to leave behind.

As for the new account name, the word "dematerialize" is much more meaningful to me in a number of ways. The word has been growing on me for a while and then one day I had the idea to make it my account name... and so here I am.

How has your art changed and developed? ...I don't know about you, but I find it fascinating to see how an artist has gotten to where they are now in their artwork. The same is true with your own work.. to look back on the past year or years and see how far you've come and how your art has developed. I find that to be very satisfying, to be able to see how you've improved. In light of that, I recently created folders in my gallery for each year that I submitted art from. After collecting the art from each year, I made some observations highlighting what was going on that year art-wise. Below are the observations from each year (just thought it'd be nice to have them all in once place, but feel free to take a look at the actual folders as well so that you can see the art that accompanies each year :)).

~ 2007 and older ~ universe-of-doodles.deviantart… ~

Reference Use: I grew up drawing primarily realism (aspiring to be able to draw as realistically as my mother could, who is a classically based painter). I did a lot of copying (from photos, from life..) and thus learned how to draw what I saw quite well. So I could draw things quite realistically... if I had a reference that is. And so.. this accounts for the painful disparity in my drawings from this time period. For example, "Dressage Horse" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) and "Bird Figurine" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) where both drawn from life. "David" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) and "Dixie" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) where both drawn from photo references. If you compare those drawings with the others, where I was attempting to draw something realistically from my head, they are quite different in quality. I was so used to drawing from a reference, anything without a reference looked very poor. (I even copied anime stills when I first started drawing anime, which was during 2007).

Photoshop: 2007 is the year that I first started using Photoshop. By the end of the year I had started using a tablet.

Photoshop: During this year I took my Photoshop painting abilities to another level. I discovered that I could use it to make very realistic pieces with ridiculous amounts of detail... hence the many hyperrealistic pieces. However, by the end of the year I was trying to move away from hyperrealism/photorealism and use more expressive brush strokes and such.

Photography: By the end of the year I'm finally beginning to play around with some more interesting compositions/viewpoints and i begin doing some editing in Photoshop (e.g. colors, contrast, etc.). Before this I was pretty much just documenting "cool stuff" that I saw, without much thought for their artistic worth. In those it was only the subject matter/"cool stuff" that made the photos interesting, not the artistic qualities (or lack thereof).

Reference Use: By the end of this year I was trying to wean myself off of being so reliant on references. However, I was still relying quite heavily on them.

Reference use with paintings: During this year I'm still trying to wean myself off of being so reliant on references. "The Forest is Alive" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) is somewhat of a success in that dimension. With that piece I began to realize that I could use my skills in realism to create fantastical pieces (as I have always been drawn to fantasy). In this way I could do more than just copy a photograph, I could create something only a painting could achieve, something that a simple photo could not. And so, since I wanted to find a way to do more than just copy a photograph, this was somewhat of a revelation.

Paintings/Drawings: By the end of the year I am beginning to be more experimental. The daily paint chip project (universe-of-doodles.deviantart… universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) was a wonderful opportunity to just play around and investigate different styles, techniques, etc. This was somewhat of a turning point in my art making.

Photography: I begin to do more dramatic adjustments in Photoshop. I also begin to experiment with diptychs and triptychs.

~ 2010 ~ universe-of-doodles.deviantart… ~

Developments: During this year I continue to do a lot of experimenting.
--> Technique: My paintings and drawings came a long way as I begin to use more expressive strokes and texture. I became quite comfortable with pastels (as I used them in my AP art concentration) and first began using very expressive strokes with my pastel pieces. By the end of the year I finally became comfortable with acrylics and developed a method/style that pleased me. At the beginning of this year my attempts at acrylic painting were just painful, as I was trying to blend the paints wet like they were oils. However, over the summer I developed a method that included lots of layering of the paint and texture.
--> Reference use: I have become much better at integrating references, using them to enhance my work but not to rely on or copy. I learn how to use elements of a reference, to transform it into something completely my own. I have also simply gotten better at drawing from my head.
--> Style: I begin to develop more of a personal style. By the end of the year I begin to develop a sub-style that is very decorative and flowery/feathery.

Emerging themes: During this year I become more aware of things that I am gravitating towards and the resulting themes in my work. A few of these include...
--> Color: I realize that I really enjoy exaggerating colors, and this becomes a theme in my work.
--> Sinews: After witnessing a decaying whale with copious amounts of sinews (universe-of-doodles.deviantart… universe-of-doodles.deviantart…), I fall in love with sinews. Sinuous organic forms thus become a theme in my work.
--> Life in death: This theme is highlighted in my AP art concentration pieces where my topic was: portraying inanimate human objects in a way that make them seem to be alive. This theme can be seen in various other places throughout my work as well, for example: "Run with Death" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…) and "Look at Me Now" (universe-of-doodles.deviantart…).
--> Unexpected beauty: beauty in death, beauty in the mundane, beauty in the ugly, beauty in pain, beauty in chaos.. organized chaos... paradoxes... etc.

Because it's been too long since I've done one of these and my other journal was annoyingly outdated. Also, The Dandy Warhols are too awesome not to do this with. And who knows, maybe you'll learn a little about me?

Choose a singer/band/group.

Answer using ONLY titles of songs by that singer/band/group.

Tag 6 more people to do so and let them know they've been tagged, of course.

singer/band/group: The Dandy Warhols

Sooo I'm about 400 pageviews away from 10,000. If anyone catches it I'll give them a free colored sketch (colored on photoshop) of their choice with a simple background.
